Louie is sure he’s nailed mise en place, a French cooking term translated as “everything in its place.” This means having all of the ingredients prepped before you start cooking. Louie, you gathered the ingredients but you haven’t measured it all out.
And we haven’t talked about why our granola is healthy, yet either.

Most people buy granola from the store. Unfortunately, store-bought versions are often packed with added sugars and saturated fat. However, you can make delicious and healthy granola at home with my recipe!
It’s easy. And would be fun to make w/ your kids, grandkids, nieces/nephews!
Because I love science and nutrition is science, I want to tell you why it’s healthy.
IS GRANOLA HEALTHY
The main ingredient in this recipe is oats.
Oats are a great source of fiber which keep you full for a long time. The fiber also helps keep your blood sugar stable and can even lower your cholesterol.

Be sure to consult with a registered dietician before making any big changes in your diet or commence taking any supplements!
Now that I’ve segued into a disclaimer paragraph:
Pure oats are naturally gluten-free and suitable for most people with gluten-related disorders, such as celiac disease. But they may have traces of gluten, depending on where and how they were processed.
- Gluten-free oats should be explicitly labelled and certified as “gluten-free.” These products typically have less than 20 ppm of gluten, which is the legal requirement.
- Some oat products have a statement like, “processed in a facility that also processes wheat-based foods.” To minimize the risk of side effects, don’t select these products.

Louie says, “Thanks, Finny!”
If you can’t coax Fin into bringing you a coconut, get the ingredients at your local grocer.
Make our best gluten free granola recipe and you’ll ingest all those lovely antioxidants! My granola is easier to chew than getting through that coconut shell.
Why this is the best gluten free granola recipe
Personally, I prefer walnuts, almonds, pistachios or pecans in this recipe. (Pecans don’t make the top nine protein-rish nuts, with 2.6 grams of protein per serving but pecans are a nutritional powerhouse too!
The beauty of this gluten free granola cereal recipe is that you can make it your own w/ choice of nuts / dried fruit.
Let’s look at two more healthy ingredients that answer the question, ‘is granola healthy for you?’
Superstars : chia seeds and quinoa.
FYI: A complete protein means that the protein contains all nine essential amino acids, which are amino acids that our bodies cannot produce!
Two plants that are also complete proteins are in my healthy gluten free granola cereal recipe!

Okay, maple syrup isn't exactly healthy...
Lastly, is yogurt and granola heathy?

Hi Sue, the recipe looks great! I am wondering about something: does the Maillard reaction involve the creation of AGE’s (advanced glycation end products) that we’ve been warned against? Thank you so much.
Great question, Marian! Yes it does. That said, lower heat–like this recipe at 275F–and moist heat methods drastically reduce the formation of dietary AGEs (dAGEs) compared to high-heat methods.
Go for lower cooking temperatures, cooking meats low and slow instead of quickly and at high heat. Opt for steaming, braising, and poaching –cooking methods that involve liquids– more often than grilling, broiling, or frying.
And you can take this granola out of the oven right before it browns if you’re worried about it. Twenty-five minutes should be plenty!
Thanks, Sue! Your knowledge is so appreciated.
You’re welcome! Thanks again for taking the time to chat!
Does Louie really eat this granola? I’m going to try your recipe with dates and pistachios!
He does, but don’t tell my husband! ha. Dates and pistachios sound delicious. Thanks for stopping by!
Ah. Great post, as always. I have made my own granola and muesli for forever, but I have never put quinoa and chia seeds in my granola. I look forward to trying this recipe. I do add hemp heart to muesli, mostly because I love the flavor. And I eat it with Kefir, which I prefer to yogurt. I also have not added maple syrup but I bet it’s yummy. Love this post!!! Thank you!
Hemp hearts are nutritional powerhouse! I’ll need to check them out. Kefir is a great choice. I sometimes eat my granola w/ lactose free milk. Thanks for sharing a few tips w/ me! I’m happy you love the post!
